Bennett is the west coast senior producer and podcast host for SYFY WIRE, a contributing writer for Sci Fi magazine, Total Film, and Fandom, and is a U.S. editor for SFX magazine. Chapter 1 Outlander: The Origins “Will we ever get to see Outlander adapted for the screen?” Since the novel first came out in 1991, author Diana Gabaldon has fielded that question from enthusiastic readers almost daily. The story of Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser seemed an obvious choice for a cinematic retelling, but the project was not without its logistical challenges. With the novel weighing in at more than 600 pages, the core dilemma always centered on how much of the action-­packed adventure would have to be cut just to fit the traditional cinematic window of two hours. With too much to lose to the proverbial cutting room floor, the world of Outlander remained strictly in the realm of print. It wasn’t until around 2010 that a possible solution started to present itself: a television series. Maril Davis, a development executive/co–­executive producer for Ronald D. Moore’s Tall Ship Productions, was looking for potential properties to produce and had the books recommended to her by friend and softball teammate Matthew B. Roberts. “[Roberts] had read the books as a reader during one of his first jobs,” Davis explains. “He passed on the books because they wanted to do movies but told me they would be great for TV. I took him up on that and read them all the way through. “I loved them,” Davis says with unabashed adoration. “This to me was my passion project.” But the television landscape at the time wasn’t yet the haven for high-­concept sci-­fi series it seems to be today. “Game of Thrones was not on at that point. Ron had tried to do Dragonriders of Pern. It just didn’t feel like the timing was right.” Cut to a personal dinner Davis was having with Moore and his wife, Terry Dresbach, where the three started talking about the projects they had always longed to do. “I said, ‘My passion project is this book series called Outlander, and I would love to do them,’ ” Davis recalls. “I didn’t realize Terry was also a fan. So we talked, and Ron seemed intrigued.” “Terry and I talked about it after the dinner a few times,” Moore remembers. “But it wasn’t really until I sat down and started reading the book that I saw the potential.” From that first read, he says, he was struck by how Gabaldon’s writing kept surprising him. “By the time I got to the end of the book, there had been some significant twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. In my head, I could definitely see a season of television and how it works through a season. Plus the fact that, at that point, there were multiple books in the series just meant that it had a life beyond season one. I remember thinking, If the other books are anywhere near as good as this, then essentially I’m in.” Davis was thrilled to get the go-­ahead to pursue. “I got in touch with the rights holder, Jim Kohlberg. We had a great meeting, but it was very obvious that they wanted to do this book series as films.” Davis left the meeting convinced a film would not do justice to the books. “Reluctantly, we walked away,” she says. “But I was like a dog with a bone,” she continues, laughing. “I just kept checking back every once in a while. One of the times, they were open to doing TV. So Ron and I went back in there and had a fabulous meeting, and it kind of started there.” Davis says they pitched Chris Parnell, executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television, to be their studio partner, but he was unfamiliar with the books. “To his credit, Chris went out and bought the book on tape and listened in his car, which was so cute,” she says. “He would call me every once in a while and be like, ‘I am sitting in my car blushing,’ which was hilarious.” By the book’s end, Davis says, Parnell was on board and ready to champion the show to the networks. The next step for Moore and Davis was to officially visit Gabaldon at her Scottsdale, Arizona, residence. “Just from the fan perspective, not even a producer perspective, I felt it was so important to get her approval,” Davis says. “I wanted her approval and just to make sure she was comfortable that this book was in the right hands. I wanted to assure her that we weren’t trying to exploit it and we understood what it was. There was Ron’s track record, certainly as an amazing writer but also as someone who obviously writes very strong female characters, from Battlestar Galactica to Carnivàle. I also wanted her to know that I was going to protect the series as well, it being so close to my heart and near and dear to me.” For Gabaldon, having the books in serious development after so many years of thinking it couldn’t work was beyond surprising. “People are always asking, ‘Why is it that you held out for Ron?’ The truth is that I didn’t,” she says with her trademark candor. “We were very careful who we did options with, because there was always a possibility that they would succeed. In which case, you will never get the rights back. We had done this only four times and, luckily, none of the first three times took.” But it seemed an Outlander series was finally about to happen in earnest. Gabaldon recalls that she was very curious about the pair who made it happen. “They came and spent two days with me at my house, talking over story lines, characters, and backstory. Asking had I written anything that wasn’t in the books that they should be aware of? Where did I see the story going? Ron was sharing with me his vision of storytelling and what he thought of the characters. I could tell that we were pretty much on the same wavelength with regard to the importance of a central character in a story, which predisposed me to him.” Gabaldon was also impressed during those initial meetings by the clarity of the vision Moore had for the series. “He began to share his own philosophy and his take on how things would work,” she goes on. “He said he would like to start [the series] with a little visual prologue that takes place before Outlander [the book] actually starts. He’d show Claire during World War II in a military hospital out in France, saving people’s lives. She is a central character, and we need to fix her in people’s consciousness immediately as the main person of interest. And I am sort of nodding as he is saying all this and going, ‘Yes. You are right.’ I could tell he did know what he was doing and I approved the direction he saw for doing it. “I gave them my blessing to start the script the way Ron wanted to,” Gabaldon explains. A few days later, Moore sent over his pilot script. “I told him when I read it, this is the only thing that I have ever read based on my own work that didn’t make me turn white or burst into flames, so I was favorably impressed.” Moore says gaining Diana’s favor gave them reassurance that they were taking the right direction with her work, which he felt was important given how devoted the series’ readers have proven themselves to be over the years. “We really wanted to engage and keep the fan base that was already there from the books and transfer them over to the TV show,” Moore explains. “Diana had her finger on that pulse for many, many years. She knew them pretty intimately, communicated with them, and had a good sense of what was important to them. She was a good indicator of where we were. When Emily moves back home to Elba and splits up, he loses control and is expelled from college soon after. The army promises an interesting future – or better: a future at all. As a medic he is briefly trained before they send him to Iraq. A year in the Middle East, a year in the war. What he sees is unimaginable and to avoid the pictures in his head and to deal with the everyday loss of comrades, he needs more and more pills. When he returns, he cannot find a way back in life. With Emily, he’s got an on-and-off relationship which is mainly marked by their common use of heroin. A normal life seems possible, but the constant need of money for more drugs and the fact of passing out frequently hinders them from actually having it.“Cherry” is the story of an average young man whose life spirals down into the abyss. It’s not the one big event that throws him off course, it’s a bit here and there, a relationship that breaks up, not getting enough credits at college, simply losing the aim in life. Of course, the experiences made in the war are a major event and it is hard to imagine that anybody can live through this without serious psychological disturbances or PTSD. The novel brings out the worst that drugs can do to somebody and it underlines how long this can go on without people around noticing anything, how long they can keep up appearances before wreaking havoc.Yet, it is not only the topic, the narrator’s life that is shown bluntly by Nico Walker. What he does masterly, too, is to adapt the language to the situation:The car bomb did what car bombs do and four were dead in the market. It would have been more but the sheep took most of the blast. So you had flesh and blood and wool on the pavement. You had bloodstains on the pavement, little lakes of blood.There is no reason to embellish anything, it’s just the blunt reality that Walker describes in the most brutal and direct way. Most of the soldiers were “Cherries” which gives the novel its title: soldiers who have never been in a fight and whose behaviour is unpredictable and therefore a danger to the whole platoon. They were ill prepared in every possible way, but the worst is that they were ill prepared to return to a life in the civilian society. Walker doesn’t beat about the bush, his novel accuses their treatment, as well as the way drug addicts are taken care of, or rather: not taken care of. He shows a reality that nobody wants to see but which exists among us. The style of writing might not be for everybody, but it is perfect for this novel.

I have never written a review for a novel, before. However, I feel a duty to explain why I believe this is one of the best books written this year.Nico Walker has accomplished something truly special with his debut novel. The book reads like a casual reflection on a turbulent, haunting past. Nico's protagonist is pragmatic and honest, both about his place in the world and his own shortcomings. As the author admits, the likable side of the main character was injected via edits - Nico does not see himself as a hero in this story.Overall, this book may be the first great classic of the opioid epidemic. Although some compare this to Hemingway, and other war focused stories, the comparison falls short. While Hemingway forced grandiose spectacle into his books, Nico takes a more micro-focused approach. He talks about the daily grind, the suffering, the things that soldiers do to make up for the traumas they experience on the ground. These inclinations transfer into private life, where the main character is incapable of integrating into society, but knows that the high is divine.The negative reviews seem to focus on the book's approach to describing soldiers. Some reek of jealousy that a soldier would "sell out" his compatriots in such a revealing way. In the book, the soldiers seem incredibly human, being put into extraordinary situations and responding in whatever way they can. However, they also commit atrocities and terrible things. From every single account I've heard from my veteran friends that have spent time in Iraq, this is accurate. There are none of the typical Hero's Quest characters in this story; every single person that is mentioned is deeply flawed. This is the magic of the story. Throughout all of the debased actions that the characters pursue, there is a strain of humanity running through it all. You FEEL the struggles of the addicts in the stories, and you can understand the choices being made as requisite at the time.Instead of simply seeing these veterans and citizens as dope fiends, you can feel the struggle of their existence through their hopes, dreams and attempts to be functioning members of society. As in life, most of these efforts prove fruitless and the cycle of addiction takes firm hold. This has been the most revealing look into a part of society that I have no experience with that I have ever come into contact with. The book is highly recommended.

The story was so tragic and yet eye opening. If you’ve never known or been involved with addicts you cannot truly understand the lifestyle and the struggle. This book is a peak into the underworld of war and drug addiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about these topics and anyone with a strong stomach as some of the situations are quite graphic.

Full disclosure: I know the author and am not a literary critic. I'll therefore refrain from garland tossing or designating its genius. I will call it an accomplishment that deserves much of the praise and attention being heaped on it.The story told is a distant reality to certain segments of the American population, and uncomfortably close to the skin of others. Depending on your personality and affiliations you will find an accurate reflection of life, or a fascinating, voyeuristic escape into the world of the desperate. Personally, at times, it was both for me.It's a poetic and vulgar book and that is the point. Fans of Bukowsi, Burroughs (see: Roy from Junky), D. Johnson, H.S. Thompson and Palahniuk will lap this up and impatiently wait on seconds. Interested to see what comes next from Walker.

I don't write reviews, I don't do dope, and I've never been to war. Nico Walker spit on his finger and created a semi-clean spot on the glass to see into the experience. Both the Army and addiction. You want to keep stopping the narrative and help him. You want to scream at him. You wonder how his parents, and all the bank workers are now. You can't stop reading it all though.

Ich kann eigentlich absolut keine Noten lesen. Nachdem ich mir spontan ein Keyboard gekauft habe, wollte ich trotzdem ein paar Noten für meine Lieblingssongs haben. Wenn man einmal weiß, wo man anfangen muss, kann man sich ja relativ gut durchhangeln :)Das Buch Piano gefällt mir! enthält viele gute Lieder wie Hallelujah von Leonard Cohen (darum hab ichs mir gekauft), aber auch Lieder von Herbert Grönemeyer, den Titelsong von Forrest Gump, etc. PP. Die Seiten haben DIN A 4 Format und sind sehr groß gestaltet. So muss man die einzelne Note nicht erst lange suchen wenn man spielt. Das einzige Manko: Das Buch ist sehr dick und entsprechend schwer. Mein Notenhalter hat unter dem Gewicht schnell nachgegeben. Da muss man also gegebenenfalls nachrüsten.

Im Unterricht spielen wir diese Hefte inzwischen vom 1. bis 5. Band durch. Erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit, besonders wer nicht so auf die klassischen Lieder steht. Man kann, wenn man es vereinfachen möchte, in der linken Hand einfach die Akkorde die darüber stehen spielen und kann so mehr Augenmerkt auf die Melodie richten. Oft ist die bekannt und damit erleichtert es das Spielen und macht viel Freude. Es wurde eine gute Auswahl getroffen.

Also ich habe mir dieses Buch geholt,weil es einige Lieder gibt,die ich sehr gern mag. Ich kann leider noch nicht beurteilen,wie die Lieder klingen,wenn man sie nach den Noten spielt,denn mein neues Klavier kommt erst in zwei Wochen,aber was mir aufgefallen ist,dass die Lieder teilweise bis zu 7 Seiten lang sind und das empfinde ich als absolute Papierverschwendung. Außerdem ist mir aufgefallen,dass bei manchen Liedern der Text auch nicht stimmt,denn ich singe sehr gern und habe mir die Texte mal angeguckt und bei ein paar meiner Lieblingssongs (die ich schon fast auswendig kann) sind mir Fehler im Text aufgefallen,das finde ich persönlich sehr schade. Und eben wegen diesen zwei Punkten vergebe ich nur 3 Sterne.

Als Ergänzung ist das Buch OK. Manche Lieder sind auf mehreren Seiten abgedruckt, nicht so schwer. Wir haben es aufgrund zwei Lieder gekauft, mein Sohn fand es dann aber langweilig. Die Hits macht es doch der Gesang aus. Der instrumentalle Hintergrund dieser Hits ist jedoch kaum herausfordend und monoton.

Das Buch ist etwas steif, weshalb es fast nicht aufgeschlagen bleibt wenn ich daraus spielen will. Das muss man schon sehr biegen. Inhaltlich kann ich nichts beanstanden, gut finde ich auch dass die Zahlen darüber stehen, dann weiß ich (nicht ganz so geübt) mit welchem Finger ich den Ton spielen soll.

Schöne Auswahl der Stücke, aber wirklich nicht schön spielbar. Leider hatte ich gleich 2 Bücher der Serie bestellt und für meinen Geschmack sind in beiden Büchern jeweils nur 1-2 gut klingende und gut spielbare Arrangements

Die Lieder lassen sich sehr gut spielen. Bei uns wird zweistimmig gespielt, das heißt Klavier und Querflöte, dazu sind die Noten sehr gut geeignet. Diese Auswahl an Noten ist breit gefächert. Kann ich nur empfehlen.
